Founded in Helsinki in 1988, the cybersecurity company WithSecure serves over 100,000 business customers across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Design agency Fyra created a workspace for WithSecure’s new office in Jätkäsaari’s Wood City, tailoring it precisely to the company’s needs while reflecting its brand through modern, inviting, and warm design.

“Through seamless collaboration and a user-centered approach, we achieved a timeless and carefully executed concept. By utilizing participatory design and research, we developed a concept that emphasizes values such as hybrid work, community, diversity, and trust,” comments Fyra.

 

Wood City: A pioneer in sustainable urban design

The distinctive wooden architecture of the building has been given the recognition it deserves with meticulously curated interior design solutions. The interior design also aimed to minimize the carbon footprint. Sustainability has been integrated through simple and purposeful solutions, optimizing space usage to create an efficient, dynamic, and vibrant environment. Designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects, the wooden-structured Wood City emphasizes lifecycle thinking, energy efficiency, and operational optimization. Developed by SRV, the site has been awarded the prestigious LEED Platinum certification, signifying high environmental standards and energy efficiency.

Finnish craftsmanship is widely showcased, with existing and recycled furniture extensively utilized. Naava’s sustainably produced products, made in Finland, also fit seamlessly into the concept.

"WithSecure was already familiar with Naava’s air-purifying plant furniture from its previous office, and thanks to positive experiences, Naava was also chosen as the plant supplier for this project. The plants align perfectly with the workspace concept developed in collaboration with WithSecure, completing the space. This project incorporated both plant furniture and movable potted plants, which were also placed on partition shelves,” Fyra commented on Naava’s role in the project.

A space designed for people

Employees have appreciated the office’s flexibility, comfort, and great acoustics. The relaxed café area on the 7th floor, with its greenery and sea views, has become a pleasant place to meet colleagues. Natural materials such as wood and wool textiles were widely used, with a strong focus on employee well-being in the design. The refurbishment and reupholstering of existing furniture, along with the use of second-hand pieces, have also been well received. Each floor offers employees a relaxation space, where they can take breaks by lounging on a sofa or stretching on wall bars. Additionally, the 7th floor features shared sauna facilities and a game room.

For WithSecure, it was essential to create a work environment that meets the evolving needs of future work and supports both individual focus and a sense of community. “We support hybrid work, but we also see the office environment as critical for employee engagement, collaboration, wellbeing and innovation. When the planning process began, we aimed to find solutions that truly support different activities, collaboration and future ways of working,” says WithSecure.

User-centricity was at the core of the design process. Employees were involved early on through surveys and an active project group. The result has been met with highly positive feedback. “Employees have appreciated the adaptability and comfort of the new space. It's been great to hear how the new environment supports their individual needs. The feedback about the new spaces has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The office design especially considered hybrid work and flexibility. “We have designed the office to support communal activities, as well as individual work. We encourage people to come to the office regularly, but we allow each team/function to agree and plan this together, rather than enforcing a strict rule."

Collaboration with partners played a key role in the success of the project. "Our main partners were Fyra, Input Interior, Vitra, Audico, Naava, JLL as well as SRV and Anttinen Oiva Architects. We appreciated these companies for their modern, innovative approach and excellent collaboration and shared vision."

Naava’s products were already familiar to WithSecure and were selected as part of the new office concept.
